My Camera Gear is a nice Facebook application that creates a photography profile with images of the cameras, lenses, flashes, and other photography equipment that you own.

It is a snap to add all your equipments. Users simply following a hierarchy of drop down selection boxes to select the manufacturer, category, product, and option. It seems to have a fairly complete list of camera gears in its database. I was able to make a list of all my major pieces in a couple of minutes. The items you add do not have to be the ones you own, you can also add anything you are interested in by using the “I want this” button.

Each of the item in the gear list is clickable (not in the above screen capture though). Clicking the item will bring you to a page about the specific product. On that page, you can read product information and reviews, see which friends have it, which friends want it, and who else (not limited to your friends) has it. If you are shopping for gear, the page also lists current prices from B&H and Adorama. If you have anything to say, there is a Review Wall you can add a quick comment.

If you want to see what gears your friends have, it is just a click away.

The application also shows you what’s popular within its users. For example, here is the list of the most popular DSLR cameras. Does this surprise you?

Overall My Camera Gear is a nice and unique Facebook application. It doesn’t help you take better pictures, but it provides you with some interesting information of other photography enthusiasts. Next time when my friends ask me “what camera/lens do you use?”, I will simply tell them to check out my Facebook profile.
