Many places are buzzing about the upcoming new DSLR cameras from Nikon and Canon. If you have been waiting for the better camera to complement your growing photography skill set, and you really cannot afford the more expensive models, the wait is almost over!

The Nikon D90 will be an upgrade to the aging D80. The basic specs are “12.3 mega-pixels, 3 inch/900K px LCD screen, 11-point AF, 420 segment RGB matrix metering, live-view, face detection, video recording“. For more details, including “100% legit” photos, check out coverages at Nikon Rumors, and Engadget. No firm release date yet, but some speculations mentioned “next week”.

The Canon 50D is an upgrade to the 40D. The detailed spec of the 50D was leaked by Canon’s China website a while ago. It will be the top-of-line DSLR with APS-C sized (1.6x crop) sensor from Canon. The direct competitor will be the Nikon D300. Official announcement from Canon is expected within a day or two.

Interesting extra information: Nikon D90 will be released with an optional 18-105mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR kit lens, while the Canon 50D will come with a optional 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 IS kit lens. Nikkor 18-200mm VR was such a popular lens, it was very difficult to get one when it was released with the D200 a few years ago. I guess Canon is interested in seeing it repeat with its own version.
