I received the following question about Capture NX2 from one of my readers.

Goods Afternoon,

I hope you can help me!

I’m getting into real estate photography and am struggling with getting excellent interior and excellent exterior shots i.e. in the one photo through windows etc.

I know in Photoshop you can take two photos; one exposed for outside and one exposed for inside and somehow put the two together to make one awesome perfectly exposed image.

Do you know how this can be achieved in Capture NX2?

Thank you in advance for any help you can give me.

Warm Regards,

Alice G.

Dear Alice,

What you are looking for is the capability of creating high dynamic range (HDR) images using multiple images in Capture NX2. Unfortunately Capture NX2 does not have such capability.

If the dynamic range of the scene you want to photograph is not too wide, you can use Capture NX2’s highlight and shadow protection in the Develop/Quick Fix section of the Edit List to recover some details otherwise lost in the shadow or highlight areas of the photo. You will have to shoot RAW and expose properly to preserve important details.

For your particular need, Photoshop may be the best option. Later versions of Photoshop (since CS2) come with built-in HDR function. If you already have Capture NX2, you may consider HDRSoft’s Photomatix Pro software for creating HDR images. You can also create HDR images using free image editor GIMP by using the old fashioned layer and layer mask techniques.
