Many have noticed some clear performance improvements with the latest Nikon Capture NX 2.3.0 release. Jason Odell, the author of The Photographer’s Guide to Capture NX2 (eBook), published a detailed performance review of Nikon Capture NX 2.3.0.
Jason found some massive performance improvements running Nikon Capture NX 2.3.0 in 64 bit mode over its predecessor Capture NX 2.2.8. But he also found that the speed gain is rather from the code optimization from 2.2.8 to 2.3.0 than from the 32-bit to 64-bit change. Basically, running Capture NX 2.3 in 32-bit mode on his Mac is almost as fast as running it in 64-bit for many usage scenarios even though the memory footprint in 64-bit mode is much larger. 64-bit will help most when users need to open many of raw photos at the same time.
Jason also noted the compatibility issue between Capture NX 2.3.0 64-bit mode and Nik Software’s Color Efex Pro 3 and provided a workaround.
