Canon Rumors claimed that the successor for the widely popular Canon EOS 5D Mark II, the Mark III or Mark X, will be officially announced on February 27 or 28, 2012. The basic specs are listed here.

  • 22mp
  • 61pt AF
  • 100% Viewfinder
  • 3.2″ LCD
  • Dual CF/SD Card Slots
  • Price: Around $3500 USD

A UK website offered slightly more details on the Canon EOS 5D Mark III spec.

22MP, 6fps, 61 focus points (41 cross) same as 1DX system
100-25600 Basic ISO 1024k dots LCD display 3:2 wide (or 3.2″ ?)
Best Video quality in a DSLR.

Can this be real?

The improvements over the current Canon EOS 5D Mark II seem to be minor except the AF system. And if the AF system is the same as the one in 1D X it may be even unlikely considering the way Canon has done to protect the revenues from their high-end DSLR cameras from being eroded by the low-end ones. Actually there are also rumors floating around saying that the similarity between the AF system on the upcoming 5D Mark III and the 1D X is only the number of points. The 5D Mark III will have a “simplified” AF system. That seems more believable.
